Conservation of Marine Ecosystems
I’ve always been a lover of nature and the environments that we live in. Human beings are bound to live a clean environment without pollutants and it is our role to conserve the environment. Due to my love of a sustainable environment I got an admiration of the marine environment and the need to conserve our marine creatures.
This was after an incident which happened one day while I was holidaying at the coast of Indian Ocean. Our tourism minister was visiting the beach that day as he sought to promote tourism and in his visit he released two turtle which had been rehabilitated back into the sea. I didn’t know the species of the turtles back then, but I had to question myself why they had been rehabilitated. The best way to seek answers of the same was to get involved in the marine environment.
Two years later I was a deep sea diver and enjoyed the scenic views of the deep blue sea. But one fact that I realized is that deep sea fishing which has been rampant in the recent years has contributed a lot in diminishing number of sea creatures. There is need to protect the vulnerable ecosystem.
Sustainable Use of Marine Resources can Help Protect the Ecosystems
We all know that there is always a connection between the resources that we have and the ecosystem/environment in which they are found. In the case of marine resources, their environment is large water bodies and they need to be protected if at all we are going to protect the marine resources there in.
In essence, we need to shun all human activities that seek to pollute the marine ecosystems such as dumping of chemicals and other waste products into these water bodies by industries. There is need of the enactment of strict regulations which will deter industries from dumping waste products or interfering with the marine environment in other ways. This in turn will help provide a sustainable and conducive atmosphere for our sea creatures.
There are other human activities such as green house gaseous emissions which too have an indirect effect on marine creatures, especially fragile creatures that can’t with stand the effects of warming temperatures such as tsunamis. This too calls for regulations to help reduce such emissions.
Controlled Harvesting Components Could also Help protect the Sea Creatures
As much as deep-sea fishing can’t be abolished, illegal fishing should not be taken lightly. Measures should be taken against illegal fishing so as to protect any endangered species. On the other hand, components used in fishing need to be controlled too. There are some components used which can disrupt the food web of sea creatures and thus end up making such creatures vulnerable because of lack of food.
In such cases, if noted that there is instability in the food web, measures need to be put in place to ensure that an equilibrium to the ecosystem is restored as early as possible so that normal stability of the ecosystem can be replaced. If it’s not possible to achieve such a balance, then there’s need to put such creatures in controlled sanctuaries so that their normal life can be restored.
All in all, every nation is bordering a large water body is mandated to create a robust aquaculture which will help protect the marine environment as well as conserve the marine creatures especially those that are endangered. I’m pursuing such measures and currently I’m working with the necessary ministries and department in my country to formulate better ways of achieving these global goals of protecting these animals.
